About Me
My name Is Hamzah Khan and I'm a filmmaker/video editor with 7 years of video editing experience. I love to tell stories through film and strive to create an immersive experience for the viewer. I'm specifically interested in joining the video production team at Hinge Health as a senior video editor since I've personally experienced pelvic/wrist MSK pain myself and strongly relate to the stories of the 5 Hinge Health members who shared their stories of working with Hinge Health to reduce pain and avoid surgery. Last year I was struggling with pelvic pain and had to find time during work hours to schedule my physical therapy. The closest center was located about an hour away with traffic from where I lived which was inconvenient and I unfortunately had to reschedule multiple times due to a dynamic work schedule. Hinge Health's MSK clinic addresses the major pain points that I faced with finding an effective and reliable approach to physical therapy. Therefore, I would love to have the opportunity to combine my passion for filmmaking/video editing with my desire to increase the awareness of Hinge Health's significant positive impact in the MSK space by telling compelling stories of how Hinge Health is helping individuals with MSK conditions to avoid surgery and get back to doing the activities they love.

Comments on Hinge Health's Interview Documentaries
After learning more about Hinge Health on their website, I decided to take a look at Hinge Health’s Youtube channel to review their existing video content. I was very inspired by the documentary style interviews that Hinge Health produced of 5 Hinge Health members. I found the videos to be very engaging from start to finish and felt that the choice of B-Roll shots complemented their stories extremely well. I could definitely relate to the concerns and pain points that were highlighted by the each of the Hinge Health members. I also liked the "Welcome to Hinge Health" video where 3 Hinge Health members' stories were woven together by using various excerpts and A/B roll shots from the original documentary interview videos.

Video 1: Hinge Health Commercial
After watching these videos, I decided to create a promotional video/commercial conveying a similar story of the journey that the 5 Hinge Health members experienced by combining shots from their documentary interviews with a voiceover that I wrote which captures the phases that I went through when recovering from an MSK condition.

My goal was to integrate my own personal experience with each Hinge Health member’s journey to capture the rollercoaster of emotions that one is likely to experience when going through the MSK recovery process.

Process for Creating Hinge Health Commercial
1) Created an outline for the story - decided to use this approach instead of a storyboard since I would be limited to using the footage from the videos posted about these 5 Hinge Health members

Video Outline
Intro: Show 5 individuals with doing different activities
Issue: Show each Hinge Health member struggling to complete the activity due to MSK pain
Discovery: Show Hinge Health members discovering Hinge Health
Treatment: Show improvement over time from using Hinge Health's platform
Recovery: Show individuals recovering and going back to performing activities shown in the Intro

2) Wrote a voiceover script for the video

3) Recorded voice over
4) Selected music appropriate for the content and mood/tone that I wanted to capture
5) Compiled footage from all Hinge Health member documentaries from Youtube, spliced out A-Roll, and kept all B-Roll
6) Decided to stick to only using B-Roll shots and minimize the dialogue used
7) Added sound effects corresponding to the environment and activities being performed
8) Edited/mixed audio to emphasize key points and ensure levels were set correctly for all audio tracks
9) Color correcting/grading was not needed since I was not working with raw footage

Video 2: Exercises for Knee Pain
After creating the Hinge Health commercial, I decided to create an Exercise Tips videos similar to the ones that I had seen on Hinge Health's Youtube channel (i.e 3 Ways to Reduce Shoulder Pain). I really liked how the exercises were broken down into simple steps and how the graphics were utilized to make the video easy to follow. In order to create a video with the same format, I decided to use the content/videos on Hinge Health's blog post "Knee Pain: Causes, Prevention, Treatment, and Best Exercises" to showcase 3 exercises for reducing knee pain.

2) Referenced 5 tips for shoulder pain video. to identify motion graphics required to demonstrate each exercise
3) Recreated motion graphics in Adobe After Effects
4) Rendered After Effects project with Adobe Media Encoder and exported as an MP4 file

Why am I applying for the Senior Video Editing role at Hinge Health?
I’ve been editing videos for the past 7 years and would love to combine my passion for filmmaking / video editing with my desire to contribute towards furthering digital health technology to reduce pain for individuals experiencing MSK conditions, facilitate their progress towards full recovery, and ultimately completely avoid the need for surgery. Based on my prior experience in video editing/filmmaking personal projects, client work, and personal experience with struggling with MSK pain, I believe that I would be able to effectively collaborate with the video production team to tell compelling and emotionally driven stories through video as a Senior Video Editor at Hinge Health.
